GN New Chem Develops Specialized Corrosion Inhibitors for Combined H₂S and CO₂ Environments

The coexistence of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) presents a complex corrosion challenge in oil and gas production. In the presence of water, these acid gases contribute to electrochemical corrosion processes, exposing downhole tubulars and surface gathering and transportation pipelines to general and localized corrosion. Elevated temperatures, high salinity and increased acid gas partial pressures can further complicate corrosion management, with significant implications for asset integrity, equipment service life and operational safety.

Effective corrosion control in these environments requires a comprehensive understanding of the production system. Fluid composition, water chemistry, operating temperature, construction materials and chemical injection conditions all influence inhibitor performance. A treatment program must therefore be developed around the actual operating environment and supported by appropriate testing and monitoring.

For demanding applications, corrosion inhibitors must provide strong adsorption onto metal surfaces and establish a persistent protective film. They must also offer suitable temperature resistance, salt tolerance and compatibility with production fluids and other treatment chemicals. Under high-temperature, high-salinity or elevated-H₂S conditions, some general-purpose formulations may exhibit reduced film stability, require higher treatment rates or present compatibility challenges. These limitations reinforce the need for application-specific product selection and qualification.

GN New Chem has developed specialized corrosion inhibitors for production environments in which H₂S and CO₂ coexist. Through molecular modification and formulation optimization, these products are designed to enhance surface adsorption and protective film formation. The resulting barrier helps limit contact and reactions between corrosive species and the metal surface, supporting corrosion control within the wider production system.

The product range is intended to address challenging operating conditions, including elevated temperatures, high salinity and high H₂S levels. Formulations and injection programs can be tailored to site-specific parameters, including produced-water characteristics, acid gas concentrations, operating temperature and metallurgy. This approach aligns chemical selection with the conditions encountered in the field and provides a basis for optimizing treatment performance.

These specialized inhibitors have undergone application validation in relevant oil and gas projects. Field performance is evaluated through corrosion monitoring data, changes in operating conditions and the effectiveness of the injection method. This evidence-based approach supports informed decisions on product suitability, treatment rates and subsequent program adjustments.

GN New Chem will continue to expand its oilfield production chemical portfolio, combining specialized formulations with technical services to deliver customized solutions for complex corrosion environments. By aligning chemical development, application evaluation and field support, the company aims to help operators strengthen asset integrity and maintain reliable oil and gas production.
